OVER 120 young people at risk of homelessness were referred to Bradford Council in the past year.

Later today Councillors will be told of the work currently being done to deal with youth homelessness in the Bradford District.

The Corporate Parenting Panel will be told that between October 2018 and October 2019 the Council received 122 youth homeless referrals.

Of these, 13 went on to become children in Council care.

The Council's Youth Homelessness team is currently dealing with 47 young people.

Bradford Council was heavily criticised for how it dealt with young people who were at risk of homelessness in an Ofsted report last year when the Children's Services department was judged inadequate.

The panel, meeting in City Hall at 4.30pm today, will be told what has been done to improve the service since then.

A report to the panel says one criticism by Ofsted was that that young people could be placed at a 24 hour access hostel for homeless people. The criteria of the hostel is 16+, which means a young person could be living alongside a much older adult.

The panel will be told that in response to this criticism the Council has invested in the service to create a “bespoke crash pad facility for young people.”

The authority also works closer with groups like Nightstop and has also created a new Social Worker post, a temporary Team Manager.
