A blue plaque has been unveiled to honour a Bradford flight attendant killed while evacuating passengers from a burning aeroplane at Heathrow Airport in 1968.
Bradford Civic Society today honoured 'Yorkshire's bravest woman' with a plaque in the city centre.
For her sacrifice, Barbara Jane Harrison became the only female recipient of the George Cross for heroism in peacetime.
Barbara, a British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) cabin crew member at the time of the accident, died aged 22. As the wheels left the runway, a loud bang shook the plane and within seconds flames engulfed one of the engines.
The blue plaque was unveiled at Bradford City Hall following a reception.
The plaque, sponsored by British Airways, will be installed at her birthplace on Kingsdale Crescent in the Bolton area of Bradford.
Yesterday's ceremony was attended by a number of guests, including Ruth Atkinson, British Airways Cabin Crew Manager, Robert Sample, who was on the plane, and Sue Buck, the sister of Jane Harrison.
