COUNCILLORS will discuss a petition, signed by almost 450 people, to install a zebra crossing near a Menston school.

Earlier this year an e-petition calling for a zebra crossing and footway widening on Main Street, outside Menston Primary School, was presented to Bradford Council after being signed by 446 people.

Next Wednesday the Council's Shipley Area Committee will decide whether to add the proposals onto a list of upcoming road safety projects in the constituency.

The petitioners say the existing footway is not wide enough for prams or wheel chairs, and is very congested during the school run. There is also no crossing guard.

They also argue that on street-parking on that section of Main Street affects

visibility, making crossing the road difficult, and that the crossing would provide benefits local residents who shop at the nearby food store.

Members of the committee will be told that installing a zebra crossing and 80 metres of footway widening would cost the Council £30,000.

The estimated cost of installing a crossing and 50m of footway widening would be £25,000 and the cost of installing a zebra crossing alone would be £18,000.

Members of the Committee will be advised to add the proposals to the list of scheme candidates to be considered by the Committee when it next agrees its Safer Roads Programme.

The Committee meets in Bingley Town Hall at 6pm on Wednesday November 6.
