A FIRE chief has urged people to "check smoke detectors" after a late-night chip pan blaze.
West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (WYFRS) was called to an address on Stanley Street, in Bingley, at around 11:30pm last night.
Crews from Bingley, Shipley and Keighley attended.
The blaze began when a chip pan was left unattended.
The occupant was alerted to the fire by smoke and then rang the fire service.
A WYFRS spokesperson said: "There was very minimal damage.
"Most of it was confined to the kitchen area and it was just smoke really."
Crews found that the person's smoke detectors were not working.
They provided some after the fire was dealt with.
Dave Dixon, Bingley Watch Manager, said the occupant was very lucky.
He added: "I would urge for people to check smoke detectors and make sure they're working.
"If they're not working, either replace them or call the fire service for any further information or advice on that."
