PUPILS who nurtured seedlings into a vegetable patch served up 'Golden vegetable soup' to hungry parents in celebration of their school's 50th anniversary.
St Matthew's Catholic Primary School in Allerton has been teaching students all about where their food comes from and the growing process as part of the Royal Horticultural Society's Big Soup Share.
Students grew onions, leeks, potatoes, carrots, beetroot, courgettes and garlic and even entered their home grown produce into the Bradford Organic Fruit and Vegetable Show.
The school took home nine first prizes and several second and third awards. When it came to cooking soup, children also made beetroot soup.
One of the volunteers at the school garden said: "It's a whole process.
"We talk about different recipes they can do. We are encouraging this generation to enjoy fruit and vegetables.
"We encourage them to take little bits of vegetables and seeds home so they can grow some at home. The children know where food comes from."
