AN investigation is underway after a former painter and decorator was diagnosed with an asbestos-related cancer.

Lewis Doubtfire (above), 73, of Liversedge, was told earlier this year that he had developed mesothelioma.

The cancer is terminal and most commonly associated with being exposed to asbestos decade before.

Mr Doubtfire has now instructed specialist asbestos-related disease lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to figure out how he developed the cancer.

The 73-year-old believes he may have been exposed during his employment with Percy Coates, trading as J Auty, who were based in Ravensthorpe.

Mr Doubtfire worked there between 1966/67 and 1967/68.

Irwin Mitchell, and their client, are specifically appealing for information about the working conditions Mr Doubtfire was exposed to and any information about the company's employer's liability insurance history.

They would like to speak to any former colleagues.

Mr Doubtfire was diagnosed after a chest x-ray.

In spring this year he had a cough, breathlessness and felt very tired.

His GP arranged for an x-ray and Mr Doubtfire was shocked to find out he was suffering from mesothelioma.

He said: "I had been quite fit and well up until the diagnosis.

"I was enjoying my retirement and spending time with my wife after working hard throughout my employment history.

"It is really upsetting to hear that my work could be to blame for me developing this awful illness, and while there is nothing I can do to change it, I need to know what caused it.

"While working for J Auty, I worked alongside plumbers, heating engineers and property maintenance staff.

"I remember on one occasion actually mixing asbestos powder in a big drum in order to make asbestos lagging to be applied to a boiler.

"I would be grateful if any of my former colleagues would come forward with any details on the working conditions during our time there and the employer’s liability insurance history for the company."
