BUS fares on services in Aireborough, Horsforth and Wharfedale will change this weekend.

First West Yorkshire’s annual fares review will take effect from Sunday, October 27 and see the cost of most adult single, day and weekly tickets rise.

For single fares the increase is set to typically be about 20p.

The company says the rise is necessary to cover the continued growing costs of investment, fuel and the impact of congestion.

But it also points out that most people who switch to an equivalent, mobile ticket (bought in advance via the First Bus App) should see ‘no increase’ in the cost of their bus travel.

And the changes are set to actually benefit younger passengers. Under 19s will face no increase on day or week ‘bought on bus’ tickets while there will be a 10p reduction on mobile tickets.

First West Yorkshire is encouraging customers who currently use cash to switch to buying mTickets, by purchasing via the app, to both save money and help speed up journey times.

Commercial Director Martin Hirst said: “As part of this review we have been keen to ensure we do what we can to support the West Yorkshire Bus Alliance objective of improving affordability for young people, and we’re pleased to have frozen or reduced travel cost for this group.

“Where increases have been necessary we have worked hard to keep them to a minimum, but some changes are necessary to reflect rising costs in the business.

“We continue to urge customers who can to switch to purchasing tickets via our mTickets app to do so as this will offer the most competitive price and will help speed up bus journey times.”

The First Bus App, which has been rated as the best on the Apple iOS platform out of all those provided by the major, national bus operators, now includes details on journey planning, real-time information and the cheapest ticket options.

As part of this year’s fares review First West Yorkshire is also continuing to provide simpler travel offers with a new, £2 flat fare single available on mTickets for travel anywhere across West Yorkshire.

Local services run by First West Yorkshire include the X84/x85 which runs between Leeds and Skipton picking up passengers in Bramhope, Pool-in-Wharfedale (X85), Otley, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Ilkley and Addingham.

The 33 and 34 services, meanwhile, stop in at Horsforth, Yeadon (34), Guiseley, Menston and Otley Bus Station (34).
