CAMPION are still challenging for top spot in Division One of the Northern Counties East League after a narrow victory at Selby Town as third place hosted second.

James Bicknell and Lee Ashforth’s red and blacks took an early lead through Mohammad Qasim but the Robins soon hit back as Chris Jackson headed them level in the 18th minute.

Campion still took a lead into the break as Qasim bagged his brace ten minutes before half-time. The visitors doubled their lead in the second half with a well-taken finish by Danny Facey but the home side were still in the game and a penalty gave Jackson his brace as Campion triumphed 3-2.

It was a bad day for the local clubs in the top tier as Thackley suffered a 4-1 home defeat to third-placed Penistone Church, Silsden were beaten 3-2 at Goole AFC and Eccleshill United’s home game against Handsworth was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

There was better news for both Brighouse Town and Steeton with both clubs winning, the Chevrons for a third consecutive time.

Roy Mason’s side were at North West Counties Division One North rivals Pilkington in the Macron Cup first round and they eased through to the second round with a 3-1 win.

The Chevrons took a firm grip on the tie with a rapid fire double midway through the first half. Tom Leach opened the scoring and Tawonga Gumboh soon added.

Gumboh bagged his brace midway through the second half but there was no clean sheet for Steeton keeper Danny Thorpe as Pilkington’s Callum Laird scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Brighouse Town moved up one place to 13th in the BetVictor North West Division after a 2-0 home win over Prescot Cables, who tumbled one place to fourth.

The visitors had the better of the goalless first half but Vill Powell’s Town came out the better side after the break and just six minutes into the second half Carl Stewart broke the deadlock as he headed home Ousman Cham’s cross.

Just one minute later Prescot keeper Ollie Taylor was beaten again as Alhassane Keita rounded him and slotted into the unguarded net after cutting out a wayward pass.
