PLANS to convert a former pub in Keighley town centre into a shop and flats have been approved by Bradford Council.

The Star Inn, on North Street, is in the Keighley Town Conservation Area, and in recent years has also gone by the name of Muldoons.

It is currently shut.

A planning application submitted by Michael Ainsworth this summer called for the ground floor to be turned into a shop and the upper three floors to be converted into five flats.

Historic pub set to be revitalised

The application added: "All works are internal to prevent any changes to the historic facades. The external styling would be unaltered to maintain the high quality stone work and original features. These match traditional  characteristics associated with the surrounding area that it lies within."

The plans have now been approved by Bradford Council.

Design and Conservation officer H. Meekings said: "The property dates to 1900 and was built in a Renaissance architectural style. It is considered to be a key unlisted building.

"I have no objections in principle to the proposal, which would appear to present a potentially sustainable use for the building and would bring the building back into active use."

One condition of the application is that work will have to start within three years.
