THE CLOSURE of a town centre street for resurfacing has led to a massive drop in trade, claims a Keighley businessman.

Nick Berard says his two companies received just one visitor rather than the usual dozen or more on Monday morning because Lawkholme Lane was closed at both ends.

He blasted Bradford Council for doing resurfacing work at the Cavendish Street end while the junction with Hard Ings Road junction is already blocked as part of bypass improvement work.

He claimed customers are facing an hour-long round trip as they follow diversions.

He says the resurfacing work, which is being carried out in phases between the Cavendish Street and Emily Street junctions, should have been postponed until the Hard Ings Road improvements are completed next spring.

Mr Berard, who runs Sagar Glass and Phillipe’s Curtains and Upholstery in adjoining units in Lawkholme Lane, said: “We are having massive problems. One person came in on Monday morning, it’s usually about 15. Mine and the other businesses are being hurt by bad planning.”

Mr Berard is also angry that resurfacing is carried out between 9.30am and 3.30pm rather than at night.
