WINDSURFER Tom Squires will make his Olympic debut next year after being selected for Team GB.

Squires, from Kingston Bagpuize, will compete in the Men's RS:X Windsurfing class in Tokyo after he was one of 12 elite sailors chosen to fly the British flag.

The 26-year-old was selected following strong summer performances at the Olympic test event, Ready Steady Tokyo, and World Cup Series, both held at the Olympic sailing venue in Enoshima.

He said: “I’m very excited but I haven’t even imagined putting on that Team GB kit yet.

“I’m just happy doing the same thing I always do, but I think I feel more relief than anything else.

"I’m just super happy all my training has paid off.”

Squires is the only men's windsurfer in the Team GB squad and will look to follow the lead of Nick Dempsey, who has four games and three medals to his name.

He said: “I don’t feel pressure following on from Nick.

“All the pressure I feel is just what I put on myself every day.

"When you are selected early like we are you have to try and raise to the occasion, grit your teeth and work hard, and because of that you don’t really feel pressure because you are just training so hard.”
