DERBY players Mason Bennett and Tom Lawrence have both been charged with drink-driving after a crash involving a Range Rover Sport and a Mercedes, police have said.

Bennett, aged 23, who had a spell on loan with Bradford City in 2014, and 25-year-old Wales international Lawrence were arrested at the scene of the accident on the A6 near Allestree, Derby, shortly before midnight on Tuesday.

A picture of the scene posted on Twitter by the Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit shows the Range Rover came to rest against a lamppost and suffered serious damage to its front end.

In a statement confirming details of the incident, Derbyshire Constabulary said: "Two men have been charged with drink-driving after a collision involving a Rage Rover Sport and a Mercedes GLC at the junction of Burley Hill and the A6 at Allestree last night (Tuesday, September 24)."

Neither player were injured but it is reported that Lawrence was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Bennett was signed on loan by Bantams boss at the time Phil Parkinson in August 2014, making 11 league appearances before being recalled by the Rams in October the same year.

Both Bennett and Lawrence are due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on October 15.
