Extraordinary scenes occurred when a meeting of Bradford’s Housing Committee was interrupted by furious Newby Square tenants demanding to know why an item concerning them was due to be discussed behind closed doors.
The outcome, one councillor asked to resign, and others were criticised for not supporting the tenants earlier. The following day, Councillor Abdul Hameed paid a visit to the Square and reported his “alarm” at the claim that asbestos had been used in the Sixties construction.
Built in 1968 to replace a clearance area known as Little India off Manchester Road, Newby Square estate looked many other developments at the that time. Bleak and as cheerless as the Square itself.
The unpopular and vandalism-plagued estate was eventually demolished in 1987 after a long campaign by disgruntled residents to have them pulled down. Even after the estate had been cleared, the problems were not over.
