CHARITY walker Jeffrey Long has collected more than 100 pairs of socks in his latest effort to help people sleeping rough in Bradford.

With the support of Tesco in Canal Road, who matched the funding he collected, he received 135 pairs at the store this week - enough for a pair of socks each for the city's rough sleepers.

Mr Long initially bought 70 pairs himself and when Tesco heard about his efforts, they donated some as well.

Mr Long, whose distance walking exploits have convinced him of the benefits of looking after his feet, says he also received donations of men's and women's underwear and coats.

He will be distributing them through groups which help the homeless including the St Pio Friary, which holds two meals a week for the homeless, and Inn Churches, which distributes food and essentials.

He said: "The are many people living on the streets, maybe 140 in total.

"We shouldn't have them on the streets. A lot have got complex problems and we need to help them solve those problems."

Mr Long is planning his next charity walk for the Lord Mayor's appeal in October. He will be walking 88 miles to celebrate his 88th birthday.
