With Blood Cancer Awareness month here, statistics from blood cancer charity DKMS have revealed that almost 60% of people from Yorkshire said they would take a blood donation from a stranger, but only 0.4% have registered to become a donor with DKMS, with people from Bradford (8%) only ranking as the fifth most generous in the region.
Every year over 2,000 people in the UK need a matching blood stem cell donation, which has to be from a donor outside of their family - people from Yorkshire aged between 17-55 are therefore being urged to register with DKMS.
Elizabeth Hale (pictured), from Halifax, donated blood and felt "over the moon" to know that she saved a life, while Lisa Nugent, Head of Donor Recruitment at DKMS, says, “A donation can be someone’s only hope of beating blood cancer."
