Murder squad detectives are investigating the death of a woman in West Yorkshire tonight.

Officers were called to reports that a woman had been badly injured shortly before 6.15pm.

The woman has sadly passed away and a man, aged 35, is being held on suspicion of murder.

Police believe this to be a domestic-related incident.

A police cordon is currently in still place in the area and will remain while officers continue with their enquiries.

Local NPT teams will be conducting high visibility reassurance patrols in and around the area throughout today.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police were called to Fitzwilliam Street, Huddersfield at 612pm to reports of a woman having been seriously injured.

“The woman has since died.

“A 35 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.”

A 21-year-man from Holmfirth, who did not wish to be named, told the Telegraph & Argus: “I got on the bus in Huddersfield to go home and as we were coming out of the town centre, there was a full fleet of police vans in Fitzwilliam Street near a pub.

“There were loads of blue lights and it was obvious something serious had gone off.

”It’s a shock to hear what’s happened.”

Police put a large cordon in place and, at one point, an air ambulance landed at the scene.

Forensics officers have been carrying out investigations.
