A BOXING coach from Bradford is currently in Russia as part of the coaching team for this year’s World Boxing Championships.

Mally MacIver, boxing coach at Bradford College, is part of the GB Boxing team taking part in the championships, which run until this Sunday.

Along with the Olympics, the championships is the highest level of competition for amateur boxers.

Mr MacIver has coached at Bradford College for a number of years, as well as supporting Bradford Police Boxing Academy and a local junior boxing club.

He said: “I’ve supported the World and European Youth Championships, but this is the first time I’ll be coaching at the senior World Championships.

“In boxing terms, it can be tougher than the Olympics.

“I will be working at a tournament where future superstars are competing.

“Boxers like Vasyl Lomachenko - the current unified Lightweight World Champion - have won medals at previous Championships, so it will be great to see that calibre of fighter.

“I was buzzing to be invited, it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. It is a personal and professional achievement to be invited; I look forward working with GB Boxing and representing the College overseas.”
