An expectant mother has been left scared to go to sleep after raiders broke into her family's home while they were asleep and made off with their house keys and the keys to the family's BMW 3 Series.

Sumbal Shaffi, 28, has been left fearing for her safety and that of her two young children - aged three years and 18 months - after the early morning raid at the end of August at their Heaton home.

She said: "At 5.30 we heard a sound and woke up.

"I thought it must be a neighbour going to work and went back to sleep.

"When I went into the kitchen I wanted to throw something in the bin but the bin was missing.

"I was trying to find the bin and then found the door handle was broken."

She realised someone had broken in and her first thought was about the car but the burglars had found the keys and it had gone as well as the house keys and those to her partner's Renault Traffic taxi.

She said she was grateful the keys were downstairs because it meant the raiders got in and out quickly.

Ms Shaffi, who is due to give birth soon, added: "Things could have turned into a lot worse. They would have come upstairs looking for the keys.

"We have not been able to sleep since. Having small children at home you feel home is the safest place but when this happened, it has seriously affected me and now I feel I won’t be able to stay at home alone at night and sleep as comfortably as I did.

"It was a very scary experience. We've put safety locks on now."

She and her partner Muhammad Rizwan, 29, are now facing a bill of up to £2,000 to replace their kitchen door and the keys to the BMW which was racking up a bill in the police compound while replacement keys are made for it.

The blue 3 Series was recovered by police in Bingley thanks to a tracker which had been fitted to it.

Ms Shaffi added that they were glad they had fitted that because it meant the car was quickly recovered.

She said no-one else was broken into that night and she thought the family had been targeted because of their car having noted their comings and goings.

"A laptop was still there and an iPad.

"It was light but that hasn't scared them."

She said BMW keys were very expensive and difficult to replace. She said they have spent about £1,000 so far on a new house door and lock and locks and keys for the Renault Traffic.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said police were called at 11.55am.

The caller reported a BMW had been taken and this was recovered in Bingley a short time later.
