THE dramatic moment that towering Jacob's Well office block is flattened to the ground will be featured in TV programme Scrap Kings tomorrow evening.

The former Bradford Council office building was the subject of a 'blowdown' in February by demolition contractor Thomas Crompton.

A team from back2back productions filmed the work of the firm over a number of weeks, capturing the moment the key building was demolished.

The firm also demolished the former police station and court building in Bingley, which will appear in a later episode of the Discovery Quest programme.

The series began in April, but viewers have had to wait until this week to see the eye-catching moment the multi-storey building was brought down.

Thomas and Margaret Crompton, from Thomas Crompton, earlier told the Telegraph & Argus the firm and its workers had been filmed over a number of months, starting last summer.

Margaret said: “We filmed for the previous series and were asked to film again this time, but that was before we knew whether we had got the Jacob’s Well contract.

“They knew we had got quite a lot of demolition jobs as we are the biggest and best in this area - that’s why they came to us.”

She added of the filming itself: “You think it’s going to be really exciting, the filming, but it was actually hard work, with the film crew following you around and having to be on your best behaviour!

“They filmed all the lads and their characters on our site and they get a chance to speak about what they are doing. Anything technical, and Thomas was filmed for that.”

Thomas added that the firm’s salvage work would also be heavily featured in the programme.

Margaret said that they had been shown the episode already and that it true to life and that they were excited for the show to be aired.

"Explosives are a last resort when a building cannot be brought down safely in any other way. The last time there was one in Bradford was when Provincial House was demolished more than 15 years ago," she added.

Series producer Nigel Gainsborough previously told the T&A that the series focused on the human side behind scrap sellers across the country.

He added that the work to bring down Bingley police station had been a “straightforward” mechanical demolition but that the blowdown at Jacob’s Well was uncommon in the industry these days.

Scrap Kings will be shown on Discovery Quest at 9pm tomorrow. The channel is available on Sky at 144, Virgin at 217, BT at 37, and Freeview at 12.
