On Monday September 4, 1939 the Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, announced the outbreak of war to Parliament followed by an address to the nation just after 11am. Too late for the morning papers, it was left to the Yorkshire Observer to bring the West Riding area up to date.

With a map of Poland on page one, as many readers were still unsure where Poland was, there was also news of the evacuation of children in the area and hints on what to do in the event of an air raid.

Bradford Royal Infirmary had also just finished their underground air raid shelter. Although not all members of the staff would be able to take cover, as some would have to stay behind and care for the patients. And pictures showed that mothers needn't worry about their evacuated children, as the youngsters had settled down quite happily in their new surroundings.
