IT WAS a day of knockout competition for the area’s Toolstation Northern Counties East League clubs, with all six local sides having Buildbase FA Vase first qualifying round ties.

Thackley had home advantage and they made it count as they won at Dennyfield for the first time this term. They had won back-to-back derby games in the NCEL top tier ahead of the visit of Northern League side Carlisle United.

The visitors took a 14th minute lead courtesy of Jordan Palmer’s opener but the Dennyboys were level at the break after Keiran Thompson had fired in a superb free-kick just before the break.

Ben Grech-Brooksbank grabbed a second half brace to give Pat McGuire’s men breathing space but it was a close game and the visitors ensured a nervy ending as Jordan Irving netted in the 86th minute to make it 3-2.

Thackley will travel to Thornaby in the next round after the north east side ran out 4-0 winners at Eccleshill United. A late first-half hat-trick from Adam Preston put the skids under the Eagles.

Preston broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute and by the break he had beaten Brad Emmerson three times. Liam Cooke wrapped up the scoring just seven minutes from time.

Liversedge were the third side to have home advantage and they will be in the next round after a 2-1 victory over Hallam after extra-time.

Sedge’s prolific striker Joe Walton finally broke the deadlock in the 100th minute but the Countrymen hit back through Sam Smith just two minutes later.

Sedge just got through after Michael Bottomley grabbed their winner in the last minute of extra-time.

Albion Sports returned from the north east with a win after beating Willington 2-0 thanks to second-half goals from Alhassane Keita and Andy Horbury.

But Campion and Silsden are both out of the competition. The Red and Blacks lost 3-2 at Esh Winning after the home side netted twice in the last six minutes to cancel out strikes from Nathan Hunt and Omar Habeeb, while the Cobbydalers were beaten 2-1 at Newton Aycliffe, Khurram Shazad scoring for Danny Forrest’s men.

Meanwhile, Brighouse Town are still looking for their first home win of the new season after ten-man Droylsden held out to win 1-0 as the sides clashed at St Giles Road in the BetVictor North West Division.

Town had some good chances but couldn’t peg the visitors back after Danny Wilkins had scored in the 18th minute. The Bloods played over 35 minutes with ten men after substitute Liam Caddick picked up a straight red card just two minutes after coming off the bench.
