Members of a cricket club in Ilkley have described feeling "devasted" after its clubhouse was destroyed by a fire.

The pavillion, which was officially opened by cricket legend Raymond Illingworth, was used by both Olicanian Cricket Club and nursery children.

Not only has the club's memorabilia gone up in smoke, the entire nursery has been left "homeless".

Mark Dexter, a trustee of Olicanian Cricket Club, has now launched a Just Giving page to raise £50,000.

Mark, who also works as a sports journalist, first heard the news after neighbours raised the alarm overnight.

The trustee said: "It's ironic that England were playing the Ashes over in Headingley and we have our own 'Ashes' to contend with.

"We're home to three senior teams, five junior teams with hundreds of members who are devastated but working hard to try and rebuild.

"We do have insurance so we'll have to look into that but something like this is a real kick in the guts."
