FOUR men have been arrested following the death of a 72-year-old man, last night.

William Arthur Lewis of Billingham, died shortly after being hit by a silver Land Rover Discovery at around 8.30pm on Friday, August 23.

It is believed the Land Rover had been travelling along Belasis Avenue when it left the carriageway at a roundabout near Chiltons Avenue and hit the man.

Police said the Land Rover then came to rest in the junction of Tibbersley Avenue in Billingham, before the driver got out and "left the scene" in another vehicle.

Investigating, police a 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and three other men, 16, 22 and 32, had been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said Mr Lewis leaves behind a wife, daughter and grandchildren.

"Our sympathies and thoughts are with the gentleman’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time and specialist officers will be offering support to them."
