SOME of the more unusual aspects of the planning system were discussed at a Bradford Council meeting.

Members of the Bradford Area Planning Panel were debating a plan to build a detached home on land at Wilmer Drive in Shipley.

During the debate they heard from an objector who raised concerns about access to the site, and saying he had deeds he claimed were proof the Council should not allow the development to go ahead.

However planning officers told members that they could only decide on the planning applications that come before them - and that issues over land ownership were civil matters.

National planning rules do not require an applicant to own the land they are applying for planning permission for.

If an application is approved in such a situation, then land ownership issues have to be dealt with privately - separate from the planning system.

Chair Councillor Shabir Hussain (Lab, Heaton) added: "What you're saying is a private matter. Someone could put in an application to build in my garden, we'd still take your money, have it come to this committee and make a decision on it. That doesn't mean it will definitely then go ahead."

The committee then voted to approve the application.
