A COMMUNITY group will urge Bradford Council to remove a park from a list of possible crematoria sites.

The Friends of Littlemoor Park will hold a Picnic in the Park on Sunday between 11am and 2pm.

The Queensbury park is currently on a shortlist of possible areas that Bradford Council is considering as a future site for a new crematoria - replacements for the existing Nab Wood and Scholemoor Crematoria.

The authority says those crematoria are reaching the end of their working lives, and that new regulations require larger replacements - which the existing sites could not accommodate.

This decision has led to a huge amount of opposition, and at Sunday's event the park group will be protesting by tying ribbons to branches on the avenue in the park starting at noon.

Over 2,300 sign petition calling for Queensbury park to be dropped from crematorium plans

A spokesperson for Bradford Council said: “The Council’s Bereavement Strategy involves replacing the existing crematoria at Scholemoor and Nab Wood with new, environmentally efficient facilities.

“Four possible locations are being considered for the new crematoria, three privately owned sites - whose locations cannot be disclosed at this stage due to commercial confidentiality - and Littlemoor Park, although the Council would prefer to build on private land if possible.

“Land negotiations and discussions are still continuing and we are listening to local people whose views will be taken into account before any final decisions are made.”
