BRADFORD Council has renewed its policies on allowing advertising on grass verges and roundabouts, a scheme which brings in £128,000 a year.

Local businesses can pay to sponsor Council owned highway land, installing approved advertisements on the land in return.

There are currently advertisements at 69 sites across the district.

At a meeting of Bradford Council's Regulatory and Appeals Committee yesterday, members were told that the current policy was first written in the early 1990s, and was now "outdated."

This year's Bradford Classic tipped to be 'best show yet'

They were told the new policies would allow the Council to have much more control over what signs are on the District's roadsides.

After being checked by highways officers, each sign would be recorded on a register.

It would make it much easier for the Council to prevent advertisements from springing up in inappropriate areas.

A report to the committee had said: "The original sponsorship initiative defined the partnership between local business and Bradford Council to support the horticultural maintenance of the sponsored areas.

“The current sponsorship initiative continues under the original ethos and is increasingly critical in meeting income targets required to support delivery of the Parks Service.”

The Committee approved the new policy.
