Yellow and black flags fluttered gaily above the vast new building in Bradford’s Westgate, as supermarket staff prepared themselves for the grand opening of the new Morrisons store in August 1969.
The supermarket in such a prominent city centre position, introduced shopping baskets as well as trolleys, for those pedestrian shoppers without cars. Sadly, the Westgate store closed its doors in April 2016, with a loss of more than 80 jobs.

Subtle changes had been taking place over the years and the growth of the non-food departments meant that they now out ranked the food sections.
The company was founded by William Morrison in 1899 who started the business as an egg and butter merchant in Rawson Market, Bradford. His son Ken Morrison took over the company in 1952, aged 21, and in 1958, Morrisons opened a small shop in the city centre.
