The police force is calling on the public to 'protect the protectors' after new figures revealed 17 officers were kicked in the past week alone.

The statistics, published by the West Yorkshire Police Federation, show 34 police officers and six staff assaults were recorded in this time.

14 officers had been spat at while nine had been punched.

The figures also showed six had been grappled/had bodily force used against them.

The organisation shockingly noted four officers had been headbutted.

The campaign, Protect The Protectors, focuses on the physical and mental wellbeing of police officers.

The force is working towards tougher sentences for those who assault police officers and other emergency service workers.
