FORMER Council offices that form part of a town's Victorian arcade could soon be converted into an "historical themed" bar.

A corner unit of the Royal Arcade in Keighley, 79-81 Low Street is a former Bradford Council Connexions office that has been shut since 2014.

A planning application by Alan Hartley will see the unit converted into bar serving alcohol, soft drinks and hot drinks.

The application says: "The main thrust of the business is to operate as a craft beer and gin establishment as an historical themed bar, as this is considered to be a unique business opportunity for Keighley and is not replicated elsewhere in the town.

Re-development planned for major Keighley site

"By promoting change on this part of Low Street, the proposal will serve to stimulate activity in this part of Low Street to compliment adjacent retail activity and promote early evening patronage in the area, which currently tends to close-down after 5pm."

The application says the business will complement a neighbouring development - earlier this summer plans to turn an empty shop in a neighbouring building into a restaurant were approved by Bradford Council.

It is due to be a new branch of burger chain Mahmoods that will open this year.

If the bar application is approved the business would open from 11am to 11pm, and create two full time jobs.

A decision on the application is expected next month.
