HUNDREDS over people have attended a rally protesting about the situation in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

More than 1,000 were estimated to have attended the gathering in front the Co-operative Bank in Tyrell Street demanding the end to what they see as Indian aggression in the Muslim-majority region.

Among the speakers who addressed the crowd were Bradford Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe, Councillors John Pennington and Kamran Hussain, former Respect leader Arshad Ali and former Leeds Lord Mayor Mohmammed Iqbal.

Local imams and community leaders also spoke to the gathering of people from all over Yorkshire and across the North of England.

One of the organisers, Mukhtar Ali, said he was really please that so many people came out to support the event.

He said: "We wanted to accommodate everyone.

"Normally it is always men but women and young people came along.

"People are suffering on both sides. It's heart-breaking, especially when you've got family there.

"A lot of people are concerned about what is happening.

"Just today when people wanted to break the curfew to go to the shops they came under live fire."

The Kashmir Solidarity group held the peaceful protest after India revoked the special autonomous status granted to the disputed region of Kashmir.

Pakistan Prime Minister - and former University of Bradford Chancellor - Imran Khan said the revocation is illegal, and he will fight the move, which he said breaches international law.
