FORTY peace campaigners have paraded to Lister Park to mark 74 years since the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Campaigners from across Bradford were earlier joined by the Lord Mayor and Bradford’s Friendship choir in Norfolk Gardens.

Cllr Doreen Lee relayed messages from her counterparts in Hiroshima and Nagasaki alongside poems and readings from local community and faith groups.

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and its supporters in Bradford organised the parade to Lister Park following the ceremony to highlight military aggression around the world today and the increasing risk of nuclear conflict.

“We are grateful to the Mayor and to Bradford’s Friendship Choir for joining the commemoration in the centre of Bradford at 11am," said Sue Easterbrook, one of the organisers.

They were hoping for a good attendance on the parade - which included drummers, banners and people holding models of doves - which they were holding for the first time.

The parade left at noon just as the rain started to come on with the banners and props made especially for the occasion at during community workshops with Cecil Green Arts.

It end with a picnic and a cabaret on the theme of peace at Lister Park with the bandstand decorated by paper cranes made by children in Japan.
