COUNCILLORS went against the advice of planning officers to approve plans to build a bungalow in a Menston garden.

Officers had recommended that members of Bradford Council's Keighley and Shipley Area Planning Panel refuse an application to build a detached bungalow at 1 Derry Lane. They claimed it would be a "a cramped and visually incongruous form of development."

But at the meeting Councillors heard from applicant Mr Hird. He said the bungalow was needed as his wife suffered from health conditions, and the couple needed to live near their daughter - the occupant of 1 Derry Lane.

Councillor Paul Godwin (Lab, Keighley West) pointed out that the bungalow would be a permanent change to the environment.

But Councillor Gerry Barker (Cons, Wharfedale) said: "The family should be commended for wanting to look after each other."

Other members dismissed officers' fears over the impact of the bungalow, and voted to approve the application.
