BRADFORD Council has issued a warning about fraudsters targeting vulnerable people pretending to be from its “safe and sound” service.

The telecare service helps monitor someone’s wellbeing using their phone line and a pendant.

It is available to anyone of any age who is assessed as needing help to feel safer, more protected and independent in their own home.

Today the Council issued a warning about people claiming to represent the service as part of a possible scam. A warning said: “We have been made aware of an attempted fraud case by an individual claiming to represent Bradford Council’s safe and sound service.

“Please be aware that the council would not contact people about this service without a good reason and they would never ask for bank or debit card details over the phone. The caller had suggested they could get the service for free – if this was the case, there would be no need for payment.

“If you, a relative or someone you care for are concerned you may have been scammed, please contact the police’s Action Fraud team online or by calling 0300 123 2040. If you want to check the call is genuine, hang up and call the Council’s Safe and Sound team on 01274 435249.
