BRADFORD engineering firm Thorite is sponsoring a Formula Student karting team in the championship over the summer.

Coming back from a top five finish and 2nd best UK team at Silverstone in July, the team are prepared and ready for the next Formula Student event in the Czech Republic in a few weeks.

Formula Student is a global competition where universities across the world provide students with the first-hand opportunity to experience motorsport engineering at its most competitive.

The events are enthusiastically supported by leading motorsport manufacturers who see these events as a proving ground for future engineering talent.

Thorite regularly supports young local engineers and their involvement with Huddersfield University's Team Hare started around five years ago when managing director, Stephen Wright, a former alumnus, was approached for sponsorship.

That involvement has developed steadily since then to the point where this year, the company has supplied an extensive range of pneumatic components along with engineering tooling and places for team members on the Thorite Academy Foundation in Pneumatics course.

The Foundation in Pneumatics course has been designed to provide delegates who have limited knowledge of pneumatics, gain the necessary expertise to design, build and maintain pneumatic circuitry and a number of these courses are held each year.

Team Hare has been involved with Formula Student for 20 years and is among the UK's most established and professional teams. The team is made up of MEng and BEng students who are studying mechanical, automotive and electronic engineering at the University of Huddersfield. The car, which must conform to all the current FIA safety regulations, has been designed and built from scratch by the students and competes in several events throughout Europe.

Formula Student is now Europe's most established educational motorsport competition for undergraduates who want hands-on experience with an innovative racing team and is man-aged by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
