PLANS to make a cash machine more "sympathetic" to the heritage building it is attached to have been approved.

Both Bradford Council and a central government inspector had refused a retrospective planning application by Cashzone to install an ATM at Pound City on Westgate.

The building is located in the Goitside Conservation Area, and the cash machine installation saw a window of the building replaced with a white laminated panel. Officers said it "detracted significantly" from the building.

The company then submitted an updated application to retain the cash machine, but restore much of the window it had filled in.

That application has now been approved, with officers saying: "The glazing is deemed to be acceptable and will improve the appearance of the building significantly. The ATM and surround will now not appear to be incongruous in the street scene as the adverse impact to visual amenity will be overcome.

"The character of the building will be maintained as the proposal emphasises the original features."
