Bradford-based Christeyns was crowned Employer of the Year at this year's awards for its caring, family approach to business.

Judges of the award, sponsored by Solenis, focused on businesses with a strong investment in employee health and wellbeing.

Staff say working at the chemical manufacturer is more than a job, rather a way of life.

For Nick Garthwaite, director at Christeyns, treating employees like family is what makes his business a success.

Mr Garthwaite said: "They're friends, they're colleagues and I'm so proud of the work they do.

"It's a lovely award to win. I think that being recognised as the employer of the year shouts above many awards. It's absolutely for the people.

"As a business we care about the employees.

Whether a manager or an apprentice, all are treated with the same respect and given the same opportunities and benefits.

The firm prioritises wellbeing and development which contributes to its low staff turnover.

Christeyns boasts an average service time of 9.5 years.

It offers high quality support and training to its staff to enable everyone to feel proud of the work they do.

Jack Palmer, who works on links production, said: "I'm very new to Christeyns and joining the family was very important to me.

"Everyone is part of the family."

The company is now turning to technology to boost its success.

"What's driving us is digital, it's technology.

"That's really pushing us more and more everyday."

But, as it moves into new digital worlds, Christeyns won't be turning its back on its roots.

Mr Garthwaite said: "Remember that many years ago Bradford was seen as being the best in the world.

"Having that 'made in Bradford' strapline still has that same cache.

"I think Bradford is punching above its weight.

"We'll invest in young people who want to work - wherever they come from.

"We ideally like to have employment in Bradford people - they have that Bradford spirit."

Finalists in this category included Taylored Dental Care, which has clinics in Wibsey and Idle, and Saltaire-based manufacturers, Cimlogic Ltd.
