COFFEE giant Starbucks will soon be opening its latest branch on the border of Bradford and Leeds.

The company revealed plans to build a drive thru coffee shop on the former site of the Junction Hotel in Spring, and the application has now been approved by Bradford Council.

The site is on Leeds Road in Thornbury, yards from where Bradford ends and Pudsey begins.

Starbucks says the 1,800 square foot cafe will create 15 full time and five part time jobs.

The company’s application says they expect 15 per cent of customers will take away, 35 per cent will “dine-in” and 50 per cent will use the drive thru facility.

There will be 16 parking spaces and several cycle spaces, and entrance to the business would be from Gain Lane.

The site, on one of the main routes between Bradford and Leeds, is the former pub and hotel that was demolished in 2012.

Bakery and cafe plan for ice cream store approved

Since then there have been numerous plans for the future of the plot of land.

The most recent was just a few months ago - in February a planning application to build two shops with six flats above them was approved by Bradford Council’s Bradford Area Planning Panel. Numerous people had objected to those plans, and during the meeting objectors became so vocal, shouting at Council officers, that they were asked to leave.

The latest plans attracted just one objection, and were approved by planning officers under delegated powers.

In the report approving the cafe, officers said: “The unit will provide a service to passing motorists on the busy A647 as well as to local residents and provide employment opportunities for the local area.

“The development would contribute towards the Council’s target of supporting the delivery of at least 1,600 new jobs per year.”

There had been one objection, raising concerns there are other similar business nearby, including Costa and KFC.

But planning officers said: “It is noted that other cafes are evident in the immediate vicinity and whilst market forces rather than the town planning system are the main controlling factors, it is not thought that this development would result in an over-saturation of this type of use to the detriment of the vitality of the area.”

A condition of the application is the cafe only opens between 6am and 10pm.

Starbucks currently has cafes in Centenary Square, at Quora Retail Park in Lidget Green and at the Rooley Lane service station.
