OTLEY is preparing to enjoy its very first Cycling Family Fun Day.

The event, designed to encourage families to ‘dust off their bikes and join the fun’, takes place at Garnett’s Field between 10am and 2pm on Sunday, July 28.

Organised by Otley Town Council in conjunction with Otley Cycle Club and Chevin Cycles, the day will include easy and hard grass circuits for children.

Trainers from the cycle club will be on hand and the laps will be timed so the young cyclists can see how they improve during the day.

Adults, meanwhile, will be able to sample hybrid electric bikes and there will also be a series of guide-led rides for up to eight cyclists - adults and children - on some of Otley’s safer and quieter cycling routes north of the river.

The event will feature women-only Breeze rides too, and free coffee from a vintage van that’s being provided by cycling gear brand Rapha.

Mechanics from Chevin Cycles will also be attending and offering those who come along free road-safety checks that will include inspections of gears, brakes and tyres.

Town Councillor Mick Bradley (Green, Danefield), who has helped organise the day, said: “We are committed to trying to make Otley a greener, safer place by encouraging more residents and visitors to use their bikes instead of their cars.

“This is a free event designed to encourage anyone with a bike to come along, enjoy themselves and improve their skills.

“I urge families to get on their bikes and come and join in the fun while picking up some valuable skills.”

He added: “Guests are advised to bring water and snacks to eat, or to enjoy the Otley Farmers’ Market which takes place on Market Place during the same afternoon.

“Children will only be able to take part in circuits if they are wearing a helmet and adults and children will both be required to wear a helmet for all the led rides.”

Visitors will be able to sign up on the day for rides if space is available, but pre-booking is recommended.

To book mixed rides call (01943) 466335 or call in at Otley Town Council’s Otley Core office on Orchard Gate.

Women-only rides can be booked via British Cycling at www.britishcycling.org.uk .

Other treats on the day will include stalls, a sticker art tent and displays of vintage bikes.
