A PRIMARY school in Wyke has improved to Good following a recent visit by Ofsted inspectors.

Shirley Manor Primary School, in Methuen Oval, had previously been rated requires improvement in 2017.

In the report, inspectors said: "The headteacher has been persistent in her ambition to raise standards. and has made effective improvements over a short period of time.

“Outcomes for pupils are improving strongly, including for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds, in reading, writing and mathematics.

"Over time, pupils’ attainment is now moving closer to national expectations.

“The headteacher and staff are passionate about helping children, whatever their background and ability, to achieve their best.

“The quality of teaching is good, however very few pupils achieve greater depth of understanding or the higher standard in national tests.

"Well-structured learning and a stimulating environment, along with strong teaching, mean children achieve well and get off to a good start in the early years.

“Most pupils behave well. They take pride in their school and attendance is improving.

"Pupils take part in a variety of sports and enjoy attending out of school clubs."

To become an Outstanding school, Shirley Manor was told it needs to ensure leaders in maths and English "consistently and accurately" monitor teaching and "take swift action to improve provision where needed".

The school was also told to further improve the quality of teaching to help pupils make better progress and are appropriately challenged.
