Every available sightseeing spot was crammed with people when the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Five-rise locks at Bingley in July 1974.
Presented with a narrow boat donated by a wealthy businessman to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, the Duke took great pleasure in steering the boat 25 yards along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal before stopping to view the famous locks, adding an extra ten minutes to the already tight schedule.
Day two consisted of a visit to Grattan's warehouses in Ingleby Road, The Duke of Edinburgh Award Centre in Undercliffe Lane, and finished with a last-minute pit stop to the golf course at Bradford Moor.
