THE East Stand at Valley Parade has been renamed the Mamma Mia Stand, but for fans wondering what a famous Swedish four-piece have to do with Bradford, there is an easy explanation.

The name change is not down to any ABBA inspiration, but due to a sponsorship deal that has been struck with the popular Italian restaurant on Upper Piccadilly.

In a statement, Bradford City said: "The Bantams are delighted to announce the launch of The Mamma Mia Stand, as part of an improved two-year partnership with Bradford’s leading authentic Italian restaurant.

"The agreement sees Mamma Mia become the official sponsor of the Midland Road Stand, following a spell as City's playing shorts partner.

"And the family-owned restaurant, situated on Upper Piccadilly in the heart of the city centre, have chosen to increase their commitment to the club.

Mamma Mia’s Leno Massimo said: “Following relegation at the end of last season, we believe the club needs support now more than ever before.

“As a family, we have decided to make a huge commitment and move away from the playing apparel in order to take up the exciting opportunity to create The Mamma Mia Stand.

“It is a massive honour for us to be backing the Bantams in this way. Bradford City is very close to our hearts and we cannot wait for the new season to begin.

“To see the stand, with its new identity, debut against Liverpool - the European champions - will be very, very special for us.”

City’s commercial manager, Michael Shackleton, added: “We are delighted to have extended our partnership with Mamma Mia - with an improved arrangement going forward.

“The Midland Road Stand has always been a sought-after asset in terms of naming rights and the Mamma Mia brand will be sitting proudly for all to see.

“We are delighted to have the Massimo family right behind us as we move towards the start of what looks set to be a very exciting season. We thank them for their ongoing support.”

The renewed partnership officially sees the Utilita Energy Stadium’s East Stand become The Mamma Mia Stand.

The Bantams confirmed on Thursday that a major new deal had been struck with Utilita Energy, meaning that the stadium is set to be officially known as the Utilita Energy Stadium until 2022.
