OFFICERS from Operation Steerside said they were close to shouting at a family after stopping a five-seater car with six occupants last night in Bradford.

The car was stopped in Bolton Road, and the occupants in the packed vehicle included a one-year-old and four-year-old, neither of whom were wearing seatbelts.

Officers said the occupants said: "Can I just get them home? I don’t have enough money for a cab”.

The operator of the Operation Steerside Twitter account added: "It’s not often I feel the urge to shout at people, but this one was close."

Drivers can be fined up to £500 if they do not ensure a child in the car aged 14 or below is wearing a seatbelt, and can also be fined up to £500 if a seatbelt is not worn correctly.

Children shorter than 135cm or aged 12 and under must also be sat in a correct car seat, or the diver can be fined.
