Demolition work has been taking place on the last remaining Keighley College building in Cavendish Street.

Bradford Council contractors last week moved onto the site and much of the disused building has been knocked down.

The contractors have installed a works compound on the neighbouring North Street college site, which was demolished in 2017, and part of Lord Street has been closed to traffic while the work goes on.

In March this year the council confirmed it would carry out the demolition this summer, and said it was in “advanced discussions” with a buyer for the site.

At the time a the Council spokesman said: “Clearing the site will offer the purchaser a ‘clean slate’ to create a modern, purpose-built structure in a highly desirable town-centre location.”

Planning permission to bulldoze the building was granted in September last year.

The property, which the council has owned since 2006, had been extensively marketed but without any suitable offers.

A works compound was retained on the adjacent North Street college site, which was cleared and grassed some time ago, so it can be used by contractors demolishing the second building.

A public sector hub is still planned for the North Street plot, despite pressure to retain the land as a green space.
