A HOUSING developer has ended attempts to drop electric car charging points from a Shipley development.

Bradford Council currently requires all new housing developments with parking space to include electric car charging points.

And this was a condition of an approval for the demolition of the Bradford Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Springhurst Road and the construction of 14 houses in its place.

Last month developer Oak Tree Developments submitted an application to drop the charging points from the scheme, claiming none of the new residents needed them. The homes have already been built.

Electric vehicle charging points 'not needed' according to developer

The request led to a backlash from local Councillors and green campaigners, and now the request has been withdrawn.

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, portfolio holder for regeneration, planning and transport for Bradford Council said: "I welcome the change of heart that has come about and that this development will include Electric Vehicle charging points, a relatively low cost facility that helps encourage homeowners to switch to lower polluting vehicles.

"We look to make sure all new significant developments prioritise measures that might impact of the district's air quality - for example, ensuring they link in with walking and cycle routes, the planting of open spaces and wildlife areas and links with public transport.

"Over 5,000 charging points have been installed on new developments since 2013. All of this is part of our wider commitment to reduce pollution and improve air quality across Bradford and the wider district."
