A MAJOR road was blocked off and a woman taken to hospital with suspected serious leg injuries after a crash involving a police car took place this afternoon.

The police BMW and a grey Ford Fiesta were involved in the incident near Crossley Hall Primary School on Thornton Road at the junction of Munby Street.

Thornton Road was closed off and one witness said there was a "heavy police presence".

In a statement West Yorkshire Police said: "At just before 2.19pm today, a police BMW X5 was responding to an emergency call when it was in collision with a Ford Fiesta in Thornton Road, Bradford.

"A male and female in the Fiesta were taken to hospital for further treatment.

"The female is believed to have serious leg injuries which are not thought to be life threatening.

"No other injuries were reported and enquiries are continuing at the scene."

A horrified mother said: "I was collecting my children from the school where the crash took place.

"The front end of the police car was hanging on the floor and I have never seen so many police, even armed police.

"I didn’t witness any of it but I believe it was an elderly couple in the fiesta from what I was told by others."

Traffic was backed up with Keighley Bus Company diverting the 67 service via Rhodesway and Allerton Road in both directions.
