YOUNG people got the chance to learn from environmental professionals in an innovative and informative setting thanks to a young ambassador from the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT).

The Environmental Networking Event, hosted by Amelia Fawcett - an Apprentice Conservation Officer with the Ribble Rivers Trust and held at Settle Rugby Club - gave people the chance to speak industry leaders and learn about their career paths and the industry.

Delegates enjoyed a speed networking event where they spoke to professionals from all walks of the sector before taking part in an open discussion on issues affecting young people and the environment.

Amelia said: “When I was growing up and considering an environmental career there wasn’t the advice readily available for me to get to where I wanted.

“The event allowed young people to talk directly to influential people in their local area about the environment and gain information on how to get involved in the industry.

“I was really pleased with the turnout of young people like myself and I hope it was really beneficial to them and also the professionals too.”

Amelia is part of YDMT’s successful Green Futures, a programme that inspires and empowers young people in the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding area through a range of environmental opportunities.

Green Futures is funded through the National Lottery Community Fund and is one of 31 projects which together form Our Bright Future; a UK-wide movement helping young people step up and take what is rightfully theirs: a healthy planet, a thriving economy and a brighter future.

The event saw professionals from Lowe Maintenance, the Ribble Rivers Trust and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority offer advice to the youngsters.

Amelia added: “This was the first event of the kind for YDMT and I’m really pleased with how many people came out to discover and be inspired by the environmental sector and explore the variety of careers that the Dales has to offer.

“It was also great opportunity for young people to develop their networking and communication skills and I’m looking forward to further events in the future.”
