Last chance to enter Beatrix Potter themed arts contest

Bradford Council’s Museums and Galleries service is reminding artists aged 16 and under that they have until Sunday to submit their entries to be included in an open exhibition competition at Bradford’s civic art galley Cartwright Hall.

This year’s theme is ‘Be inspired by Peter Rabbit: Mischief and Mayhem exhibition’ that is on at the gallery until September 8.

Young artists are being encouraged to read books by Beatrix Potter, keep a sketchbook, create a book illustration or look closely at our British wildlife to help inspire them to create masterpieces for the exhibition.

Artwork can be submitted by young people themselves. Teachers and community groups can also submit multiple entries on behalf of their children.

The competition is free and is open to anyone aged 16 or under who lives, or studies in the Bradford Council district. Artwork in any form will be accepted, for example printmaking, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, crafts and video.

There will be a free prize giving party on Sunday June 23 between 1pm and 3pm for everyone to see the artistic talent of the young people of Bradford, as well as refreshments, face-painting and the opportunity to buy the artwork in the exhibition.

The judging panel for the competition will include, Christine Halsall, the Chair of the Friends of Bradford Art Galleries and Museum and Samantha Yates Saltaire based stained glass artist.

Artwork selected for the exhibition will be on show at Cartwright Hall from June 22 to November 10.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “We have some amazingly talented young artists in the district and this is a great opportunity for them to have their masterpieces on display as part of the exhibition in the stunningly beautiful setting of Cartwright Hall.

“I would encourage anyone aged 16 or under to take this opportunity and submit their entries for the Bradford Young Open.”
