ENVIRONMENTAL group Extinction Rebellion will stage a peaceful protest in response to the District’s high pollution levels.

The Bradford branch of the activist group will mark Clean Air Day on Thursday by holding an event in Shipley - along one of the most congested roads in the country.

The protest will start at 5pm on John Street adjacent to Wycliffe CofE Primary School on Saltaire Road and move along the A657 to Clarence Road outside Saltaire Primary School for 5.30pm.

The road is part of a stretch from Greengates to Saltaire that was recently named the most congested in UK outside of London.

The group said: “Many places in Bradford suffer from toxic levels of air pollution. The dirty air on the A657 is a particular threat to the health of citizens, especially to children whose schools are dotted along its route.

Titus Salt built Saltaire to escape Bradford’s 1850’s smog. Sadly we are now in a time when invisible particles are not only a threat to us but also threaten the health of the planet.”

They are calling for an end to road building in the district, and "the immediate rapid expansion of an affordable, cleaner and greener public transport system."
