BINGLEY residents have reported groups of children throwing eggs and other missiles at passing motorists near Bingley Grammar School this morning.

One Crossflatts resident who did not wish to be named said he was passing the school at around 10.50am and saw around 30 or 40 children throwing the eggs and spraying foam around.

"I didn't get hit because I stopped the car, but saw large groups of youngsters doing it.

"I phoned the school to ask them if they were proud of their students. They said they were aware of the incident and had teachers outside trying to catch them.

"I don't know what the reason was but it is a very dangerous thing to do. They were outside the school and near the Royal pub and the butchers and fish and chip shop.

"The school said the only advice they could give was to ring the police.

"I've lived in Cross Flatts for 25 years and have never witnessed or heard anything like this happening before," he said.

"There were a lot of residents around looking on at what was happening," he added.

On a Wilsden Facebook page a member posted at around 11.10am: "Please be careful driving through Bingley. A gang of lads at the traffic lights just past Bingley Grammar School are throwing stuff at people's cars as they drive past and trying to open car doors that are stopped at the lights. I've phoned the police."

She added she had to go to the car wash and said another car driver could not see out of her windscreen.

A number of pupils are understood to have completed their GCSE exams today.

Councillor David Hesletine (Conservative, Bingley) said: "This behaviour is not post-exam high jinks and should not be tolerated.

"There is a danger to road users and pedestrians with potential for accidents and injuries or worse, as well as damage to vehicles.

"The school should take a proactive roll in identifying those taking part and they should be dealt with firmly by the school, police and parents.

"I am sure those involved would be mortified if someone damaged their phone, PlayStation or Xbox, or do they not respect anything, including themselves?"

Fellow Bingley councillor John Pennington, leader of the Conservative group, added: "We are continually having problems in and around Bingley Grammar School particularly with parking. Parents dropping off and picking up their children literally park anywhere. The school seems hesitant to grasp this; almost an out of sight, out of mind situation.

"As far as this latest incident is concerned, the headteacher wants to get a grip. High jinks is one thing, but this sort of business is another and needs to be addressed, in my view."

A spokesman for the school refused to confirm if the children were pupils there, but added they had been informed of activities going on outside and had staff outside.

"We have advised people to ring the police," she said.
