NEW rules that will see car owners fined if people drop litter from their vehicle have been introduced by Bradford Council bosses.

The Council’s decision making Executive voted to pass new enforcement measures, which would see litter louts charged £100, at a meeting yesterday.

Recent changes to the law removes the need to identify who threw the litter from a car before enforcement action can be taken, and can see the responsibility fall onto the vehicle’s registered keeper.

Even if the car owner was not the one who dropped the litter, they would still be fined if they failed to co-operate and identify the guilty party.

Litter louts who throw rubbish from vehicles in Bradford could face new fine

The initial charge would be £100, but this would be reduced to £80 if the fine is paid early.

At the meeting Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “This new legislation is another string in our bow to tackle littering. It gives us the ability to better tackle the problem.”

Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe said: “If you play by the rules then that’s fine, if you don’t then we’ll use enforcement actions against you. We want everyone to be able to live in a healthy, clean area.”

A campaign promoting the fines will now begin.
